When is travel the most positive experience for kids?

So far, I've only taken a toddler on a cross-country flight, but I'm considering taking my kids on adventurous travel now that they're older. While even toddlers can retain those warm and fuzzy memories, there is something to be said for older kids getting more out of a trip.

If you've traveled with tots (or are planning to), what age do you think is best for both parents and kids to get something meaningful out of the experience?

I used to refer to traveling with my kids as a relocation, not a vacation. Now that our kids are older, we love traveling with them. It's so much easier when you don't have to pack all of the additional baby gear and necessities. It's fun to experience new places and activities together and have them remember it months or years later. Traveling has become one of our favorite things to do together. We also enjoy including grandparents and extended family on our travel adventures for added fun!

I agree with Beth. So much easier without all the stuff that babies and toddlers require. My youngest is 5.5 so she can still be a little whiney, but my boys (10 and 8) are great!
