Real vs Fake Christmas Tree?

Parents are polling your holiday opinion: real vs fake Christmas tree? I have had both live and artificial Christmas trees over the years and know there are certain pros and cons to both types. Every year, as my husband is dragging the dried-out tree from our house, pine needles projecting themselves across three rooms, he asks if next year is the year we switch to an artificial tree. I humor him and say maybe, but we both know we'll be back at the tree farm next year :)

Haha! This is the same reason why we had a live tree for exactly one Christmas! Those needles could be found for months!

I love our live trees too and love the tradition of picking out the tree and decorating. When I was growing up, my sister and I always also had small artificial trees in our bedrooms, which we decorated with tiny ornaments, and I can't wait to revive that tradition with my boys.

I do love real trees, but we purchased a natural-looking artificial tree a couple years ago when I got tired of driving across town with a tree strapped to the roof of the car. I also hate putting lights on a tree, and the artificial tree completely eliminates this task! And, for the years where we go out of town for Christmas, there isn't a dried out tree waiting for us when we get home.

Except when the lights stop working in your pre-lit trees. Each year I lose more and more and it’s very frustrating to string lights on top of the non-working lights.

Exactly why we bought ours at Costco!

This is a great question Sue! We always had live trees growing up so I am following with that tradition. Ironically, my parents just bought an artificial one last year. But for us, yes you still find pine needles in your house in July, yes you have to water the tree often and yes you may get sap on you when you are decorating your tree, but I still would not trade my tree in for a fake one!

We used to love getting a real tree, but then we were gifted an artificial one. The kids still love helping assemble and decorate it, and it's not quite as messy as a real tree!

I'm so sad but I think this is the first year we might not be getting a tree!! My daughter is at that age where she wants to grab everything, and we have a small apartment so keeping her away from a tree would be tricky. It breaks my heart since picking out and decorating a tree is one of my favorite things to do!

When my daughter was a year old I cut out a small tree and different shapes out of felt and stuck the tree to the wall with painters tape and let her decorate it with the felt shapes. This year a relative gave my daughter a magnetic Melissa & Doug tree-shaped Advent calendar. Other years we hung ornaments from houseplants.

Maybe you could get a small tree and put it on a table out of her reach. They have cute little ones and you can still decorate it and put a little skirt around it.

That was the original plan actually! We just don't have a spot to set it really. What we really need is more space! ;)

I hear you. My apartment is small but I'm moving soon. They have little miniature trees that are more for decoration and not the same, but a little one would work. My kids also have the Charlie Brown Tree and we put it up and make it look festive. They sell them at the pharmacy stores.
