Dorm room essentials for college students

As I prepare to take my oldest off to college for the first time, I would love to create a list of dorm room essentials with fellow parents to help guide our shopping and packing as we get ready for this big transition.

Those of you who have been there (and those who haven't but can imagine what your kiddo might need!) - please weigh in! What do you think are college dorm room essentials? Both obvious and uncommon/surprising ideas welcome!

A fan is a good call if your kid's dorm is not air conditioned.

A rug to make the space more cozy and comfortable.

    Mini fridge.

A set or two of dishes, including cup, bowl, plate and silverware.

Dish soap and sponge, and something to store them in for light dishes you might use in the dorm room.

Laundry basket or backpack, and laundry detergent.

Basic tools, and duct tape. My mini hammer, screw driver, and roll of duct tape came in handy so many more times than I could have imagined when I was in college.

Shower caddy for transporting stuff to and from communal showers.

    Tupperwares or food containers.

Towels and bedding, probably for a twin XL, which is the mattress size they use at many colleges. I have seen them stock up on these at Home Goods around the end of summer.

Basic OTC medications and first-aid kit, like Tylenol, Advil, Zyrtec, Benadryl, bandaids, Neosporin, hydrogen peroxide. A thermometer for taking their temperature.

Shower shoes, for sure. I just learned they make some with holes now to dry more quickly.

I have seen those too! But I can’t help but wonder if the holes sort of defeat the purpose of protecting your feet from the bottom of the shower.
