So many kiddos gravitate to the kitchen to "help" from a very young age, but it's not always the safest option to allow them to get involved. Did you take the Montessori approach and teach knife skills early on, or did you wait until your child was significantly older?

We bought this kid-friendly kitchen tool set for our kids a couple years ago. It includes a plastic knife, spatula and whisk. My almost 10 year old expressed interest in cooking and baking a couple years ago so we started with this and it worked out great for him.

We have a German friend who runs a forest kindergarten in Germany. When he came to stay with us, he had our 4 and 6 year olds chopping veggies with real knives, and stirring them into a great big pot over the stove. I was a little apprehensive, but was surprised at how well they did. (No fingers were lost!) I wasn't truly comfortable with them using kitchen knives until age 7-8 though.
