Volunteer Opportunities for Kids Around DC

Volunteering with The Birthday Project involves helping to organize and host birthday parties for children experiencing homelessness. DC Central Kitchen volunteers work alongside their devoted front-line staff and Culinary Job Training students to cut, chop, peel, and prep fresh produce as they prepare balanced meals for the community. Volunteer shifts are available for registration up to 3 months in advance. No cooking or food service experience required! Volunteers must be 12 or older.

Volunteering with Special Olympics District of Columbia supports athletes with intellectual disabilities through sports, health, and inclusion programs. Volunteers assist with coaching, event coordination, and cheering on participants during competitions and activities. It’s a meaningful way to promote acceptance, celebrate achievement, and build a more inclusive community.

Get your hands in the dirt at the Urban Demonstration Garden. Volunteers work outside and learn about planting, harvesting and caring for organic vegetables. The garden yields over 2,000 pounds of fresh produce for education and distribution each year. Capital Area Food Bank relies on volunteers to make their garden grow, and to share the joy of growing fresh produce with others! Individuals, families, and small groups of 5-15 volunteers are welcome.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s youth volunteer programs give young animal lovers the chance to learn about animal care and shelter operations. Participants help with enrichment activities, community outreach, and projects that support the well-being of shelter pets.

Volunteering at the Greater DC Diaper Bank helps provide essential baby and hygiene products to families in need across the region. Volunteers sort, count, and package diapers and other supplies for distribution to community partners. It’s a hands-on way to support families’ well-being and ensure every child has access to necessities.

Volunteering with A Wider Circle supports individuals and families working to overcome poverty by providing essential items and life-building resources. Volunteers help sort donations, furnish homes, and assist with programs that promote stability and dignity. 

Volunteering with Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland helps deliver nutritious meals and friendly visits to homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities. Volunteers provide vital companionship and support, helping clients maintain their independence. 

Lisa R said:  Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland delivers healthy meals and social interaction right to the door of those who need it most. Two person volunteer teams work 60-90 minute routes delivering food and chatting with homebound neighbors. Kids can accompany adult volunteers on regular routes or shopping trips (including quarterly ones for pets), sign up to deliver during school breaks through the Moms for Meals program, or get student service hours for volunteering in the Main Office Kitchen.

Volunteering with Wreaths Across America honors veterans by placing remembrance wreaths on the graves of fallen service members. Volunteers participate in ceremonies, help lay wreaths, and ensure that each hero’s name is spoken aloud in tribute. It’s a meaningful act of gratitude that preserves the memory and legacy of those who served our country.
