Here's an interactive list of parent recommendations for kids arts and crafts places around NYC. Where do your kids like to go for art classes, drop-in pottery painting, canvas art and other crafty activities?
We are collecting reviews for each recommendation on the list, so please chime in with your experience to help fellow parents looking to keep their creative kids busy.
Many of these places host creative summer camps and birthday parties, too!
SMB Studio Arts
Staten Island's SMB Studio Arts offers kid-friendly topics to keep youngsters engaged. There's Kids' Comic Art, Fashion Boutique Workshop, and the At the Zoo Workshop. Kids will learn techniques such as watercolor, wire sculpting, papier-mache, and drawing. Topics for teens include animation, manga, human anatomy, and portfolio development.
Canvas and Crayon
At Canvas and Crayon, preschoolers start with the basics creating simple representations of everyday objects so they gain confidence and have fun. As kids get older, they learn about color theory, shading, perspective, building a portfolio, and more. There's also painting technique and stop-motion animation classes. Materials are provided. They also offer these art classes in Russian.
Art Fun Studio
The Art Fun Studio in Bay Ridge offers ready-to-paint options with pre-drawn canvases and plaster that's ready to decorate. Kids can choose from favorite characters or opt for open-ended designs. Take your creations home right away.
Kids’ Crafts at Home Depot
Many parents may not even realize this, but Home Depot hosts free kids' craft workshops the first Saturday of every month. You can register in advance, but it's not required, at a location near you to make a craft to take home and use. Kids get an adorable, official Home Depot apron to use and then take home as well. (An adult must remain with the child at all times during the workshop.)
Barking Cat Studio
From tots to teens, everyone is welcome at Barking Cat Studio. There are year-round workshops, weekend classes, and mini camps. Each class explores art from an age-appropriate perspective allowing kids to build confidence while having a great time.
Textile Arts Center
Textile Arts Center offers an after-school program and camps where kids can explore weaving, printing and dyeing, felting and soft sculpture, and sewing and fashion.
Private Picassos
Private Picassos, an art studio providing art classes for kids and adults, offers a variety of group classes for kids. Offerings have included Art Around the World, shape exploration, and whole body art. In the art playgroup for babies, non-toxic materials are used for your little one to explore.
The Painted Pot
Head over to The Painted Pot for an afternoon of pottery-painting fun! Choose from a large variety of pottery, including letters, mugs, figures, and more.
Taro's Origami Studio
The Drop-In Corner at Taro's Origami Studio welcomes guests of all experience levels to fold their own origami creations, guided through each step by tablet software. A 30-minute drop-in session gives access to unlimited paper, a variety of origami models, and stickers and stamps to embellish the creations.
Creatively Wild Art Studio
Creatively Wild Art Studio was the first original grass roots art school to open in the DUMBO area (in 2009), it's the go-to spot for creative experiences for all ages and abilities (from Toddler-Adults). Brooklyn Museum
After you tour the museum galleries, stop by The Creativity Lab. You and your child will love discovering new techniques in painting, sculpting, and art exploration. Supplies are provided... just make sure you are ready to get a little messy and have a lot of fun.
Rubin Museum of Art
Rubin Museum of Art hosts Family Sundays in their Education Center. Museum educators demonstrate a themed art-making activity and then kids can unleash their creativity.
The Paint Place
The Paint Place sets aside weekend mornings for family-friendly versions of the studio's painting class. Families can work together on one project or each person can create their own masterpiece. Materials are provided. All you have to do is show up in your "painting" clothes.
Eckford Street Studio
Wake up early one Saturday and stop by the Family Open Studio to show your child how fun art can be. This studio offers art instruction in sculpting, collage, painting and drawing . There's a different art project every week. The sessions are about two-hours, and children are free to play afterwards.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers some of the best art collections in the world, but it also has a great art studio for families. Whether you attend the MetFriday's "Drop-in Drawing" sessions or the "Family Afternoons" on a Sunday, you're sure to have a wonderful experience. Parents and kids can create their own sketches, paintings, and artistic creations with the MET's very own art instructors.
