The Grove Interpretive Center
Glenview Park District's The Grove is a walkable outdoor history museum. The newly renovated Interpretive Center serves a showcase for local history and nature, and as an educational programming space. At the Interpretive Center, you can explore the large animal tanks and the exciting new Turtle Island habitat, discover new exhibits that let you follow in the footsteps of Illinois naturalist Robert Kennicott, meet a full-size prehistoric relative of the modern-day sloth, and so much more!

Located on 2,492 acres, Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve is home to 740 native plant species, as well as over 300 species of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles. The preserve features 4 mapped trails, perfect for hiking, biking, snowshoeing or cross country skiing.

I recommend Waterfall Glen for the main trail access to Rocky Glen trail (.2 miles) which leads to a beautiful waterfall of the same name. The views are amazing, the access parking lot is nearby, and the trail is suitable for all ages!

Museums at Lisle Station Park
The Museums at Lisle Station Park provide visitors the opportunity to learn about the heritage and culture of 19th-century Northern Illinois. Schedule a tour and check out an old railroad caboose, the depot station, the old tavern, the blacksmith shop, and the farmhouse. Adults can attend workshops to learn about blacksmithing, and free family-friendly programming is offered throughout the year.

Volkening Heritage Farm
Step back in time, and experience Schaumburg as an early German settler at Volkening Heritage Farm. Not only does the trail boast beautiful views of Lake Michigan, but it also traverses many popular amenities and landmarks including the Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, Lincoln Park Zoo and the Chicago Children’s Museum. The park also includes some great Chicago beaches, playgrounds and sports fields along its route. Be prepared for crowds, and note that parking may be difficult during peak hours.

Barrington Area Library
The Barrington Area Library’s Youth Services area is a super‑fun play space where children can climb through playhouses, stage puppet shows, try out a giant Light Bright wall, shop in a pretend marketplace, and even slide around—all in one vibrant room! It also hosts exciting storytimes, STEM and art workshops, live music, and theater experiences that spark creativity every month. Older kids can hang out in Studio Kids or the game room, and families can borrow Activity Kit backpacks to take the adventure home.

There's also an impressive MakerLab (3D printers, laser cutters, Carvey), though its use is reserved for resident cardholders. You'll also catch on their calendar a recurring Harry Potter Fan Club, Lego Club, and Babywearing Mama dance parties. A lovely Family Book Club also invites kids in ages 4 - 8.
Tip: Don't expect to get too much work done while the kids play. The kids' area can be quite lively and loud!
