Our list of San Diego's indoor playgrounds has you covered when the weather isn't cooperating, too.
Collier County Park
The canopy-covered playgrounds at this Ramona park have plenty of shade, and families can also play basketball and wander a native plant garden.
Hilton Head County Park
A year-round children's playground and seasonal aquatic splash park, Hilton Head County Park in Rancho San Diego offers kids a pirate's adventure in themed play areas. There's also exercise stations, shaded picnic and barbecue areas, as well as restrooms.
Lake Poway Playground
Don't miss the brand new playground at this family-favorite spot that also has great hiking, fishing and pedal boat rentals for families.
Mast Park
Silverset Neighborhood Park
Kelly R: This is our favorite neighborhood park in Poway! My kids prefer to come here because there's plenty to do for a variety of ages. The modern playground has areas for little and big kids, including slides, bridges, swings, a zip line and sand pit. There's basketball, baseball, picnic tables and restrooms. A centrally-located grassy field is perfect for playing, and a large walking path encircles the park. It does get warm here with minimal shade, so I recommend planning your visit for earlier or later in the day if it's going to be a hot one.
Grape Day Park
Grape Day Park is Escondido's oldest park and the grounds for many community gatherings and festivals. The whimsical playground area pays a nod to its name, with a giant grapevine climbing structure and a slide decorated with purple grapes.
Hollandia Park
Torrey Meadows Park
Free
Kelly R: This is my family's pick for the best playground in San Diego. The newer, modern play area features a variety of play structures to appeal to different ages, surrounded by padded flooring. The park has shaded seating areas, a large grassy space to play, basketball hoops, clean bathrooms, and a paved path running around it that we enjoyed using to teach our kids to ride their bikes. The parking lot is small and fills quickly, but there's ample street parking available. Think about renting out the gazebo area if you have a birthday to plan!
Civita Park
Kelly R: This expansive park in a residential area of Mission Valley has some of the nicest playgrounds in San Diego! The modern shady playgrounds are especially fun for kids who love to climb, but leave plenty of time to wander and explore the splash pad, giant outdoor chess, mural-lined tunnel and much more.
Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park
Kelly R: The impressive facility at Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park has one of the best playgrounds in San Diego, with modern play equipment designed for all ages. There's a tot lot, climbing wall, accessible swing, 4-person seesaw, and even a parkour area. Bring the bikes to check out the (very popular) pump track, too!
Waterfront Park
Waterfront Park has a prime location, and is home to one of the best playgrounds in San Diego. Known for its run-through splash pad features, extensive modern climbing structures and themed garden rooms, this harbor view park also hosts events like farmer's markets and community festivals.
Spreckels Park
Known for its summer music concerts and nice central location in Coronado, this San Diego park has a large playground complete with ideal shade from its mature trees.
Kellogg Park
Kellogg Park has one of the best playgrounds in San Diego, if you're after a good view! Located along the large park at La Jolla Shores beach, the lifeguard-themed playground is lined with palm trees, a boardwalk, and true California vibes all around.
Bonita Cove
Kelly R: One of the best playgrounds in San Diego for kids who love to climb, this recently-renovated spot in Bonita Cove Park has an enormous rope climbing structure inspired by the coaster at nearby Belmont Park.
Olympus Park
Kelly R: This unique hillside park in Leucadia is filled with unique playground structures, a zipline, a skate park and bike pump track. Bring some cardboard to "sled" down the turf sledding hill! There are no restrooms and no parking lot (street parking here can be difficult), so be prepared!
