Elemental (2023)

We all liked this movie, but I actually think it is a movie for adults, that also appeals to kids, instead of Pixar’s usual formula, which is a movie for kids, that also appeals to adults. The overarching allegory about race and class felt pretty sophisticated for the younger set, although I think some of the message would still translate. The animation and music were lovely and lively.

Patagonia

I’ve been brand loyal to Patagonia for a long time for all of the reasons mentioned above, but also, the quality is just amazing. One Patagonia coat has been handed down SIX times in my family—from my nephews to my boys and back to younger nephews! Also—and this is admittedly highly specific—their toddler winter coats have the BEST hoods! They fit well, they always stay up, and they’re so warm you can forgo hats some days. Simply the best.

Handwritten Card

As a teacher, I always appreciate a gift card, but what I really love is an actual card. I have a box full of every single card I’ve ever received from a student. When kids write something specific and meaningful about you, it fills your cup in a way that nothing else can! (Obviously, the gift card + actual card combo can’t be beat!)

Starbucks Gift Card

I’m a teacher! And I can confirm that teachers always love “basic” gift cards—Starbucks, Amazon, etc.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023)

Some of the tween humor went over the heads of my 4- and 6-year-old boys, but they still loved it! Maybe a little scary for younger kids?

The Willoughbys (2020)

I agree! It’s quirky and morbid—sometimes just weird—but totally loveable. Ricky Gervais as the narrator cat was what first my caught my attention!

Home (2015)

Jim Parsons is brilliant as the voice of Oh, and my kids get up and dance when Rihanna’s “Dancing in the Dark” comes on. This movie is irresistible.

Alba Botanical Soothing Sunscreen

I’ve tried a billion sunscreens, and I have to say that this is my favorite for both kids and adults. It looks, feels, and smells like a luxurious lotion. It blends in easily and stays on well.

(For those with sensitive skin, however, this might not be the best choice—it is not a mineral sunscreen and it does have fragrance.)

Coolibar Swimwear

I tried one of these suits for my two year old last summer on a recommendation. This summer, it still looks brand new (and it still fits!). Coolibar makes high quality UV protective clothing, and the fabric is really comfortable. I appreciate their full coverage styles—my five year old wears the full bodysuit; and my three year old years the hooded full bodysuit. Nobody complains about how little sunblock we need to put on! (They make great stuff for grown ups too.)

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

My kids seem to like the sequel, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, even better! Obviously, the cheeseburger walking on French fry legs steals the show. Super cute.

Turning Red (2022)

Admittedly, my toddler boys were not the target audience for this movie, and much of the adolescence-focused humor went right over the heads. And yet, they really loved it—the music, the dancing, Mei Lin in red panda mode, and the wacky tween characters. (Also, I really loved it too.)

Lightyear (2022)

We just saw this—it was the first movie we watched in the theater that my boys (3 and 5) made it all the way through! Beautifully rendered visuals and many touching moments about friendship and teamwork. Sox is a robot cat the whole family will love . A little scary for the three year old, though…

Sun Prints

Sun prints (also known as cyanotypes) are a simple form of photography in which you arrange objects on specially treated paper, place in the sun for a few minutes, and then rinse in water to reveal beautiful prints. You can use any types of small objects, but it’s especially fun to use intricate natural objects (feathers, leaves, etc.) to create your design and capture the memories of a special day spent outdoors.

Creepy Carrots

This “creepy” tale follows Jasper Rabbit as he deals with a trio of spooky carrots who have been following him. Everyone tells him that he’s just imagining things, but he’s not so sure. This book has always been one of our favorites (the pages are covered in tape where the pages have been “overused”). It is compelling, funny, and uniquely illustrated with smooth, shadowy drawings, mostly in grayscale but with significant pops of color. The story ends with a twist that parents will enjoy but might be over the heads of younger kids, who never have any reason to doubt that what Jasper Rabbit sees is real…

The Artful Parent

If you are looking to infuse more creativity and art making into your family life, this book is the best place to start. It is filled with with great art ideas and recipes, and most of the projects are simple enough for even toddlers. The art in this book is process-driven and open-ended, which frees up little artists to experiment, do what feels good, and have fun. No more coloring inside the lines! Even if you don’t get the book, you have to check out the blog by the same name and try raised salt watercolor painting and using rubbing alcohol drops on wet watercolor to create amazing effects.

Yup, we have two copies of this one as well. There’s just something really special about Spot.

Museum ABC: The Metropolitan Museum of Art

This might be my favorite ABC book of all time, as it combines the alphabet with some of the world’s best art from The Met. Each letter is associated with one word, and that one word is represented by four different works of art. For example, “A is for APPLE” is accompanied by four different artworks of apples: a pop art apple by Lichtenstein, a still life by Cezanne, an Ancient Greek urn depicting women gathering apples, etc. We have so much fun discussing which “style” is our favorite and pointing out colors and other details of interest. I love that the book simultaneously reinforces alphabet recognition and ignites discussion about fine art.

I’ll never get over the bowl of soup waiting for Max at the end of the book. “And it was still hot.”

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

It’s a classic for a reason! My son used to have me read the book out loud while he acted out each stage of the caterpillar’s transformation. And any Eric Carl’s book can serve as perfect inspiration for collage art projects—we paint pieces of paper in bright colors and then cut out the pieces we think we’ll need by looking at the illustrations.
