Spyscape Museum

My teen and I had a blast here. The games are so interactive and fun. Totally worth the trip into Time Square!

Navy Pier

Navy Pier is fun and iconic, but also pretty crowded, touristy, and removed from the rest of the city, so I wouldn't prioritize it over other Chicago sites if I were visiting with kids.

Chicago Water Taxi

This is such a fun and inexpensive way to experience the city. Super easy to jump on from either Ogilvie or Union Station if you're coming in from the suburbs, and you can take it to any number of destinations to begin exploring! It's also a great way to see the beautiful architecture along the river without paying for a full architecture tour (which are super cool).

Java Cow Coffee & Ice Cream

Our family is always up for ice cream, and while it’s impossible to find ice cream we won’t enjoy, I have to say this one was just ok. Not bad, but maybe a little rich (rather than refreshing) for our taste. Next time I think we’ll try Dolly’s just down the road- I’ve heard good things about their ice cream, too!

A Minecraft Movie (2025)

My Minecraft-loving kids LOVED this movie, and have been watching it on repeat ever since we got it. Though I didn’t enjoy it quiiiite as much as they did, it had a lot of genuinely funny moments, and did a great job presenting the Minecraft world for fans. Jack Black was perfect as Steve, and I truly enjoyed Jason Momoa as his counterpart soon-to-be bro.

Willow Creek Park Playground

Awesome playground worth a drive while staying in Park City! My kids had so much fun playing on the multiple climbing structures, various long slides and bridges. It has lots of really cool and unique equipment! They especially enjoyed the scavenger and nature hunt game on the playground. The playground is partially shaded and has shade nearby at some picnic tables as well. Large bathrooms and a water refill station are much-appreciated amenities!l

City Park

We enjoyed this playground quite a lot while staying near the downtown area this summer. Convenient to all the fun of Main Street if you are staying nearby, and a nice playground with fun features like a rope structure, small zip line, balance beams, swings and slides. The playground equipment isn’t shaded, though there is a fairly large shaded area with lunch benches just next to it.

  • Playground featuring a rope structure, a slide, and swings, set against a blue sky with trees in the background.
  • Children climbing on a red rope structure at a sunny playground with slides and trees in the background.
  • Playground with slides, swings, and climbing structures under a blue sky with clouds and nearby trees.

Dragon Eggs with Dragon Inside

My kids just got these awesome dragons eggs as a party favor and we all love them! The egg is about three inches tall, and you can unscrew it to find a matching colorful dragon inside. The dragon itself is about four or five inches long, and is SO fun to play with. It works great as a fidget toy, too, as it appears to be made of a bunch of small pieces all connected together, making it so fun to manipulate. We took it to church with us and it was an awesome, quiet distraction for our 5 and 7 year olds.

Green Eggs and Ham

Definitely one of the best Dr. Seuss books! Fun rhymes and a good lesson. It's also fun to make green eggs and ham for the kids after you've read it to them (I used green food coloring in scrambled eggs)!

Rookie of the Year (1993)

I loved this one as a kid. Who wouldn't be excited by the idea of miraculously getting to join your favorite sports team as a kid?!

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (2012)

We enjoyed watching this with the kids, but I didn't find it to be remarkable in any way. A perfectly fine family movie.

Annie (2014)

We've enjoyed all three movie adaptions of Annie with our kids. I would say that this newer one had the least amount of slightly questionable content, and a more modern feel, and is a good intro to the Annie universe for today's kiddos. (Though I love the original movie with Carol Burnett as Ms. Hannigan, it had quite a few surprisingly inappropriate comments/scenes for a kids movie!)

Minecraft Minecoins

My kids are always begging for me to buy them Minecoins to buy fun skins, mods and other in-game upgrades. A gift that will always be welcome by any kid who plays Minecraft!

Minecraft Foam Sword & Pickaxe Combo

My Minecraft-loving boys love to re-enact their Minecraft battles in real life, and I am so glad they now make these foam Minecraft weapons - MUCH better than the hard plastic ones, which tend to break when kids try to actually use them like a sword and hit stuff, and are more likely to hurt someone if "play fighting" goes south.

Minecraft Creeper Hoodie

My 5 and 8 year old boys love their creeper hoodies, and it's the only sweatshirt they ever want to wear. I've gotten two different kinds and the quality has only ever been ok (cheap polyester material, so-so zipper), but its still worth it for how much my boys love it. It's worth noting that some creeper sweaters don't have the zip up creeper mask on the hoodie, but this is my boys' absolute favorite part, so make sure you look out for it if you want it!

Hello Kitty Clear Mini Backpack

We got this for a 5-year-old friend who loves Hello Kitty, and I was quite happy with it, and think it makes a great Hello Kitty gift for any age. The bag itself was larger than I expected (about a foot or more across), and would work well for kids, teens and adults. (But not as a school bag, as it is not tall enough to comfortably fit a folder or school work.) However, it’s a great bag for fun, and the fact that it’s clear and sturdy makes it perfect for taking to the pool, beach, amusement parks, ball parks and anywhere that might require see-through bags. It was fun, too, to stuff it with little treats and snacks to amplify the gifting fun!

Volunteer Together

Volunteering together is a wonderful way to introduce kids to the idea that they are part of a larger community, and can have a positive impact on it through their actions.
