JOANN Art & Craft Classes

JOANN has a variety of online and in-store classes, many of which are specifically structured to teach kids the fundamentals of sewing, quilting, crochet, clothing design, and more, for a wonderful new hobby kids can enjoy for years to come. Class offerings may vary by location, so double check at registration!
Art Soup Studio Weekly Studio Classes
Hannah Scott: Local artist/painter/muralist Laurie Van Balen has been teaching art since 1988, and offers classes for all ages at her Art Soup Studio in drawing, painting, and mixed media. Students learn new skills and techniques while working on projects with the reference of their choice.
Hannah Scott: Crochet, painting, paper crafting, food crafting -- there's always something new to learn at a Michaels! Classes are offered online and in person (availability of in person classes varies by location), along with special events throughout the year. Some classes are specific to kids, and others don't have age restrictions, so use your best judgement and choose a project you and your kiddo can reasonably work on together. You'll love the kind of bonding that comes from creating side by side! Some classes and events are free, with premium classes offered for a fee.
Purple Dog Art Studio Classes
Hannah Scott: Weekly art classes at Purple Dog Art Studio are divided by grade level to ensure age-appropriate instruction and adequately challenging projects. Classes focus on introducing and developing art skills, techniques, and exploring a variety of mediums. Art history, design, and long-term projects are explored with older students.
Art With Anna
Hannah Scott: Art With Anna offers private and semi-private art lessons for kids (and adults!) at a variety of levels, with the goal of creating a space where everyone can feel free to explore their creativity and imagination. They can also work with you for a homeschool art curriculum, offer art kits for a creative indoor activity for kids at home, and have a variety of fun art party options, too.
Transit Arts Art Studio Workshops
Hannah Scott: Free art workshops at Transit Arts give teens a chance to work on drawing, painting, and multi-media art skills. Curriculum also includes art business information such as prepping for exhibition and considerations when selling artwork.
Columbus College of Art & Design Saturday Morning Art Classes
Hannah Scott: The Columbus College of Art & Design may be an undergraduate establishment, but they're also committed to providing quality art instruction and inspiration to students much younger than college level. Their Saturday Morning Art Classes span 10-week semesters and cover topics from animation to illustration, graphic design to drawing and more.
Ohio Craft Museum Youth & Family Classes
Hannah Scott: The Ohio Craft Museum is run by the Ohio Designer Craftsmen and emphasizes community outreach, education, and exhibition throughout the year. Youth & Family Classes are offered periodically, and include family workshops, summer camps and spring break mini-camps, teen workshops, making DIY holiday gifts, and more.
Columbus Music and Art Academy
Hannah Scott: Art classes at the Columbus Music and Art Academy are divided into 3 groups -- ages 4-7, ages 7-12, and ages 12+ -- with unique curriculums for each that develop creativity, discipline, fine motor skills, art appreciation, line movement, shading, composition, color concepts, and more.
Enrollment is for the academic year (August-May) and concludes with an Art Exhibition.
Aprons and Easels
Katie G.: Aprons and Easels is a fun, social painting studio located in Hilliard offering adult, family and kids classes. An instructor will walk you through the step-by-step process to create a themed canvas painting. Kids classes include one hour of instruction (plus more studio time to complete if needed) to create a 9"x12" painting on canvas. Teens have the option to paint on a larger canvas. See their event calendar to register for upcoming classes. It's a great place for a kids birthday party, too!
